Radiography

Amongst the scientific techniques employed in the examination of musical instruments, radiography is one of the most widely-used and well-known.

An X-ray can reveal restoration work, irregularities in the wood, the channels produced by wood-eating insects and all the signs needed for the identification of the state of preservation of the instrument under investigation.

Maestro Negroni is in charge of the radiography team at the "A.Stradivari"International Institute of Violin-Making (I.P.I.A.L.L.) in Cremona, where radiography of bowed and plucked stringed instruments made by the great masters of past and present is undertaken.

The effetiveness of radiography is well expressed by the exceptional document where the living insect can be seen. The details of the picture leaves no doubt as to the activity of the insect, which has then been removed.

An X-ray can reveal restoration work, irregularities in the wood, the channels produced by wood-eating insects and all the signs needed for the identification of the state of conservation of the instrument und investigation.

The violin had not shown any visible anomalies with conventional examination; in contrast, radiography allowed a timely and effective intervection to save the instrument.
